Impact Sourcing 101 


To get the low-down on some of the key terms used related to impact sourcing, see our glossary below: 

  • DE&I – Diversity, equity, and inclusion are three closely linked values held by many organizations that are working to be supportive of different groups of individuals, including people of different races, ethnicities, religions, abilities, genders, and sexual orientations.
     
  • ESG – A framework that helps stakeholders understand how an organization manages risks and opportunities related to environmental, social, and governance criteria. ESG takes the holistic view that sustainability extends beyond just environmental issues.
     
  • Global Impact Sourcing Award – A global award presented by IAOP, in partnership with the Rockefeller Foundation, recognizing organizations that are leaders in Impact Sourcing.
     
  • Global Mentorship Initiative – A nonprofit organization that provides guidance and business skills to underserved college students and refugees through online mentorship to prepare them for their first career job.  
     
  • Impact Sourcing – An inclusive employment practice through which companies in global supply chains intentionally hire and provide career development opportunities to people who otherwise would have limited prospects for formal employment, according to the Rockefeller Institute.
     
  • Refugee – People who have fled war, violence, conflict or persecution and have crossed an international border to find safety in another country, according to the UN Refugee Agency.
     
  • Scope 1, 2, 3 – A way to categorize the different kinds of carbon emissions a company creates in its own operations, and in its wider value chain.
     
  • Supplier Code of Conduct – A statement of the behaviors an organization expects of its suppliers and their staff. It may extend to the supply chain and may include commitments on how the organization will work with its suppliers to build trust and ensure compliance.
     
  • The Tent Partnership for Refugees – A non-profit organization launched in 2016 to mobilize the global business community to include refugees. Its network includes more than 300 major companies committed to integrating refugees into their host communities. 
     
  • United Nations Sustainable Development Goals – Also known as the Global Goals, these 17 goals were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
